Isle of Lewis Civil Engineering | Site Supervision

Here are a few examples of the type of work undertaken:-

New Houses
Our client had a plot with a loch view and wanted to create a family home with plenty of space for children and entertaining, making the most of the views but also not dominating the landscape.

A 1½ storey house was designed giving a large kitchen/family room with 5 bedrooms and living room.  The family room was designed in such a way that 180° views could be achieved.

The latest timber kit was used to achieve a well insulated house, as well as underfloor heating, an air source heat pump and solar panels were installed to create a comfortable living environment whilst keeping running costs down to a minimum.

Extension 1

This was a single storey, flat roof fibreglass extension.  It was fully designed, creating two additional new rooms and a toilet.  Detailed working with the builder and planning department was required to create an extension on time and within budget.

Extension 2

A two storey hipped slate roof extension was designed, this created a bathroom, bedroom and utility room, downstairs.  Upstairs a bedroom with walk in wardrobe was created.  The layout of the existing upstairs rooms was also amended as a new staircase was created allowing the old staircase to be removed.  The extension also included an attached garage with loft space.

Garages - Pic 3

Various sizes of garages have been designed and these have ranged from block wall to kit type garages.

Extension 3 - Pic 4

A second storey flat fibre glass roof was designed creating a new en-suite and a shower room.  A solution was also found to turn a derelict black house into an artists studio with profile steel sheeted roof and a glazed gable end.

Extensive communication with the client, builder and planners was required on this project to deliver a solution that the client was happy with but which also met with the planning guidelines and was within the clients budget.

Extension 4 - Pic 5

The clients existing house was located close to a Loch and they wanted to create additional kitchen and bedroom space, making the most of the stunning views from the house.

A two storey extension was designed, giving the users more living space.  The design achieved a large open plan kitchen/family area, with a large upstairs bedroom with a walk in wardrobe and storage.  The client had a dream to have a balcony, and this was achieved by opening out double doors from the bedroom, giving space to sit outside and enjoy the views.

Extension 5 - Pic 6

The client wanted a reasonable sized extension which would give them additional space for returning family, this was achieved creating a new bathroom, a snug living room, an additional bedroom, as well a new kitchen and porch/utility room.

Lochs Agricultural Show Ground - Pic 7

The client required site supervision for the groundworks to create a new Show Ground area for the Lochs show.  I was involved in the process to re-design the site layout to allow a building to be re-located, calculating the volume of rock required for the groundworks, as well as setting out the area which would be blasted for rock.

This project has involved a great deal of liasing with the contractor on-site, local utility providers, Planning, Building Control and the Show Committee themselves
